A place exists where people do not burn their trash?

“These walls are funny. First you hate ’em, then you get used to ’em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them. That’s institutionalized. ”

-Shawshank Redemption

This is how I am feeling at the moment. I know it will pass. Living in another country brings about a rollercoaster of emotions. But I am forgetting what clean air is like. I  saw a rat in my garbage yesterday eating what looked like a piece of cheese. I went up to it and started talking to the vile thing like one would a cute puppy. I actually thought it looked adorable. Dogs are scarce in Surabaya because Muslims consider them unclean, so I  have to make due with what I have. Maybe a pet rat is in my cards for the future?

The smell of burning trash is not bothering me as much, and the numbness of my tounge from all the carbon monoxide is starting to seem like something I have lived with forever.

The smell of the human waste- ridden river that I pass over everyday on the way to work is not smelling as bad either.

I am going to have some major reverse culture shock when I visit home for Christmas.
