Usually, my posts are about the observations I make while living and traveling in a new country. However, being back in ‘Merica, I realize at times I feel like I am living and traveling in a new country.
Since I have been back, a day has not gone by where I have not felt shocked, confused, bamboozled, angry, overwhelmed, and or disgusted at American behaviors witnessed.
Take for instance my experience at Walgreen’s today:
“Would you like to donate $1 to the Diabetes Research Foundation?” -Clerk
“No.” -Me
“Well, would you like to purchase a $1 candy item” -Clerk
Does anybody else see the irony in this?! I wanted to grab the loudspeaker in the store and shout to the Heavens that “No, I would not like to buy a $1 candy item, because then I would just be another asshole contributing to the cause of Diabetes. So wake up America! There is no research needed, the answer is right in front of your face- Stop eating high fructose corn syrup!”
But, of course I didn’t. Instead, I just walked out of the sliding doors feeling shockrydisconfuzeled.
